SABR

Vince spent ten years as a Board member for the Society for American Baseball Research. Eight of those ten years were as President of the Board, making him the longest tenured President in the fifty-one year history of SABR. Along with the CEO and the remaining Board Directors, Vince engineered the turnaround of a then-fledgling SABR. In 2009 when Vince was elected to the Board, the 6,000 member organization suffered from an aging and declining membership base and a lack of connection to the commercial baseball industry.

The turnaround plan included an assessment of the current organization in the context of the changing media and technology landscape. A new CEO, Marc Appleman, was brought in to help make the organization more contemporary, more digitally focused, and more integrated with MLB, MLB Network, and the entire baseball ecosystem. In the ensuing few years many “wins” were posted, including the inclusion of SABR’s Defensive Index into the Rawlings Gold Glove and Platinum Glove selection process. At SABR’s peak during this turnaround, revenues doubled with only modest cost increases and the not-for-profit organization became a valued member of the baseball community.

On June 26, 2021, Vince was announced as the winner of the Bob Davids Award during SABR’s Annual Business Meeting. The award — which is the Society’s highest honor — honors SABR members whose contributions to SABR and baseball reflect the ingenuity, integrity, and self-sacrifice of the founder and past president of SABR, L. Robert “Bob” Davids.
